You Should've Seen us Gannin'...
To celebrate the hottest day of the year so far, a bunch of us decided to run in this year's Blaydon Race.
Our runners this year were (left to right) Phil, Georgie, Martin, Ruth and Tim. Whilst nobody threatened to take the £1,000 prize for first place, everyone put in a good time.
The famous course starts at Balmbra's in the Bigg Market, where an ecclectic bunch of participants gather to warm-up and soak up the unique atmosphere prior to the race. We spotted an elite Kenyan athlete warming up next to a drunk guy who was running the race in jeans and plimsolls.
The course runs along the Scotswood Road through to Blaydon town centre, where on the finishing line you are greeted with a Geordie welcome and some much needed refreshments. Complex carbohydrates and energy drinks to help replenish lost fluids maybe? No chance. Tired runners are given black pudding, tripe, crisps and a ham sandwich, all washed down with a bottle of Broon Ale. Lovely stuff.
