A few weeks ago we blogged about the earth shattering naffness of Microsoft's Songsmith application. It's still rubbish by all accounts but, as with all these things, someone has found a way to turn it into the latest hot internet meme.

To recap: Songsmith asks you to sing a melody and then constructs a song around it based on your choice of synthesised instruments. But what would happen if you played it a vocal that already existed? Well, Wonderwall becomes a terrifying gabba-style rave-up, while Roxanne gets a jaunty Caribbean-themed makeover that makes a career in prostitution sound as appealing as two weeks in St Lucia.

Occasionally though, the mating of vocal and song achieves something almost sublime. Check out Songsmith's version of the Beastie Boys' 'Intergalactic' above. It brings a hitherto undiscovered vulnerability to the song that we actually rather like.
